My name is Alex Gray and I’m a Portland-based Graphic Designer and Screen Printer. As a queer, neurodivergent person with a disability, creative experimentation and expression is essential to my being.
With a professional background in marketing and design, and a personal practice of fine art illustration and printmaking, I created a queer skate wear brand called GNDR SHREDR (@gndrshredr). GNDR SHREDR is an homage to the quad skate and queer communities. With my designs I hope to embolden everyone who’s different to show up and take up space in the skateparks--a largely white, cis-male dominated space. Over the last three years, I’ve moved from a small, DIY operation in my apartment to a studio space inside of a queer owned skatepark outside of Portland. I design, hand dye, and print every piece in quarterly seasonal collections, and since August 2023, have been organizing and running a bi-monthly queer art market at Stronger Skatepark.
Queerness and difference are essential to my personal practice, and everything I make and do can be traced back to the desire for my younger, vulnerable self to see an example of someone like them represented in the world, so they never have to feel alone again.
